  • ElectronicSquare was wished in to life over a bar as result of the Ballmer Peak Theory or some other suitably strange effect which we will never fully understand.

The plan was that we take the social hub of the University of East Anglia, The Square, and make it available on the WWW. Several more drinking hours past and we wake up with a niggling feeling that we’d solved world hunger and time travel, but we couldn’t remember either solution. We could remember the digital version of the Square though, so we got down to building a web page, then another, then another.

After throwing a few redesigns around, we got to the stage where our mum’s loved it. After throwing that design away on principle, we finally got up and running with a site we liked. We got a few students using it, then a few more, and before we knew it, we were a finalist for the Guardian Student Media Awards for best student website, and would you believe it…we didn’t win. Not to be discouraged we plodded on and kept the site alive and growing in popularity for the next year, before we left university to enter the real world.

Taking separate paths in career, the two main protagonists of our story went on to form their own businesses, Medium Rare Films, and HeadEnergy. After an impromptu drinking session however, we have decided to bring back ElectronicSquare, and a few other projects, for Old Times sake, as well as start working on some new ones.
